She made her television debut in the pilot episode of the series Space: Above and Beyond as Lt. Vanessa Damphousse, one of the main cast members.
Chapman took a leave of absence from a post-graduate film production program at the University of Southern California to film the pilot and the first few episodes of the series.
At Twentieth Century Fox Television, she first appeared in an audition with Randy Stone, senior vice president of talent and casting, and two days later, David Nutter, the pilot’s director.
She acknowledged that the character didn’t have much to do in the first two parts of the episode, so much so that when she was required to read lines for an audition, they were for a different character because Damphousse hadn’t yet been developed.
As they were creating the new character, the writers incorporated bits of Chapman’s personal history and experiences. Despite a coordinated fan campaign to keep the show going, it was canceled after one season.
