He got a degree in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific and then got a master’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He got married to Adelicia Montelongo, and the two of them had five children. In 1986, he also became an American citizen.

Hernández worked as an engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Later, he became an astronaut at NASA.
